I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the concept of emotional avoidance, especially how it impacts our relationships. This is an especially important topic because we ALL avoid in some ways. It’s our way of coping with the stress of life.

Avoidance can take so many forms, large and small:

  • Delaying talking about something important
  • “Zoning out” in front of the TV
  • Overeating
  • Spending time with friends instead of your spouse
  • Overworking
  • Excessive exercise
  • So many more!!!!

No matter what it looks like, the result is that you are NOT PRESENT with yourself or in your relationship if you are avoiding. Sometimes avoiding is necessary as a way to recharge and refresh. But if done too frequently, your life begins to suffer. And your relationships will too.
